Blog#9: Slang

I'm Noriko. Today's topic is slang.

Firstly, I sum up lecture 1 in CONTEMPORARY TOPICS.

Slang is informal language associated with particular groups. It's used by everyone in mainly order to construct their identity. Using slang has benefits- making you desirable, showing mastery, sharing social & emotional experience, and giving you fun. It's no longer taboo.

Secondly, I pick up Japanese 3 slang.
1. Disru
2. Shasharu
3. Ikumen

Meaning
1. despising, abusing, and running down other people or things
2. suggesting or acting positively in the situation he shouldn't do so. It's used to despise him.
3. men who are willing to raise up their babies.

Who uses
1. young people
2. young people
3. 20-30s people

How it came
1. "Dis" is English prefix which shows denial. "Ru" makes a word verb in Japanese.
2. It's divided into "shasha"and "ru". "Shasha" came from "shasharideru", which is the old Japanese and has same meaning as "shasharu". "Ru" makes the word verb.
3. It's divided into "iku" and "men". "Iku" is 育 which means raise up something. "Men" is men.

Why they're used
1. It's easy to say. And it's not direct expression. So it prevents people from feeling heavily when they talk about the experience being despised.
2. The sound is comfortable to say.
3. The society requires men to be Ikumen. So media made it to input this word into people's brain. The more spread this word, the more opportunity increase for people to think about men's raising babies. It results in increasing a number of "Ikumen".

Blog#8:Affirmative Action

Hey, I'm Yuki.
Today, I'm going to talk about "Affirmative Action". I know this word isn't familiar in our country. I never had heard it before studying it in one of my classes. However, I chose this topic because I love to know your opinion!! I think it is important to understand USA.

"Affirmative Action" is eliminating racial discrimination. It is a preferential treatment for minority like a black and women. This purpose promotes participarion of them in society. It is applied in examination and job hunting. However, this idea has many problems. For example, in 1978, white man sued for failing examination of Michigan Univ. This university automatically gives 20points to minority in this exam. Supreme Court approved his claim while affirmative action was legality. Also, president Bush supported him. However, assistant president Rice who is black women agreed with affirmative action. In short, this idea is not stability.

In my opinion, I agree with affirmative action because USA need race balance. Everybody knows USA is salad bowl or melting pot. I think this is USA. So, they have to blend human race well. However, Michigan Univ is too much. I think they should use affirmative action as score is same points. I mean black pass the test when white and black have same score.

I don't have confidence that I can explain well because it is difficult for me. X( So, if you have any question, please let me know!!

Agree??
Disagree??

Blog#7:Baseball Game Watch

Hello, you guys!!
I'm Yuki. I'm sorry my article was late.

How was your summer break? I hope you had a great one!! In this blog, I'm going to talk about a memory of my summer break. The most exciting memory in this summer break was baseball watch at Jingu-kyujo(神宮球場). I had never gone to there before. However, I'm addicted to it!! Don't you know baseball well? Me, either!! But, don't worry. There are some tips you will be interested.

First, you can watch a baseball game after school. They play it at night time. It takes 20min from Gakushuin to Jingu-kyujo(神宮球場). Second, ticket is cheap. It is 1500yen. But, this seat is little bit far from player. Third, support is so fun!! We sing songs. Each player has an original song. You can remember it soon because it is repeated many times. Also, you can enjoy drinking beers!! It makes us more excited and feel good. Lastly, you can watch fireworks. When I went to there, fireworks set off as the half was over. It was very beautiful.

Therefore, I recommend baseball game watch to you. How about this week? If you don't have any plan, check here!!
My friend really loves him lol.

blog #7: My first summer vacation of my college life

Hi I'm Kotaro Yajima. I'm talking about my summer vacation. To be honest, I did almost nothing but water skiing. Since I belong to the water ski team, I had practices every day. There are 4 college students' competitions in a year, and the biggest one named inter college competition is held in September in Akita.
A week before the competition, I was chosen as a jump player. Since one senior jump player was injured on his legs so he quite to play. Then I had to practice a lot. Because of I am a freshman, I had no skills of this sport. Thanks to practices, my jump became better and better, many people said that I am a genius. The day of my jump came. My turn was 5th, I was super nervous from early morning. Players can jump 3 times, and the longest distance of 3 jumps becomes his record. If he miss 3 times, there is no record left. All or nothing, that's water ski.  I failed 2 times and there was no way out. Then I heard all team members sing songs to cheer on me. I thought I had to make my jump success. Finally my jump succeeded, the record was 24.1m which is 19th out of 32 players. Anybody gave me a hug when I came back to a Gakushuin's team tent. Since it's the biggest competition, also the last competition for all seniors, I was happy and proud of being a player of men's jump team. This day became a most unforgettable day. Thank you.

I don't have a video when I jumped in the competition, but I have my practice one. I'll upload a video. I want you to know this is what I do.
